Coatesville Train Station

Location: Coatesville, Pennsylvania

Design Statement: The Coatesville Train Station will
provide accessible rail accommodations for the Keystone
Service.

PennDOT’s initial station design solution incorporated
a midblock station tower on the north and south side of
the tracks that required a bridge over the rails and costly
changes to the existing catenary. Bernardon’s concept,
“Destination Station”, proposed an alternative to shift
the station towers to an existing underutilized vehicular
underpass and recommended the underpass be used
exclusively as a pedestrian way.

The solution eliminated the need to construct the bridge
over the tracks and the catenary relocation resulting in
millions of dollars of savings. As a result of Bernardon’s
thoughtful design, wayfinding to the station is improved
in the City of Coatesville, and the underpass and
pedestrian plaza knit the station into the urban context
more sensitively.
