HBS provided a full range of services for this LEED Silver Certified, 250,000 SF (27) Bay PACU
surgical platform expansion and patient tower project. The new surgical (13) Bay ER Expansion
platform offers 15 new Operating Room suites, including 3 high-tech labs for Central Sterile Processing
Catheterization and Electrophysiology and 1 hybrid Operating Room housing an Retail Pharmacy
ARTIS Pheno a robotic imaging system featuring a floor-mounted robotic C-arm Satellite Pharmacy
system for individualized preprocedural planning and intraoperative guidance. Pre-Procedural Testing
Three ORs were left shelled for future expansion. The surgical platform
expansion also provides new areas of no-invasive cardiology and pre-procedure HBS Services
testing. Equipment Planning
Equipment Procurement
The 4-story patient tower houses 75 private patient rooms, and 24 ICU rooms. Equipment Installation
The hospital's current Critical Care Unit and three existing Medical-Surgical units Transition Planning
were relocated to this space from the West Wing. The project also included a Facility Activation
26,000 SF 13-room expansion to the emergency department featuring a Move Management
separate entrance and was designed with the flexibility to become a trauma Project Management
center.
Project Size
The new tower provides a new main entrance and amenity spaces including an 225,000 SF
outpatient pharmacy offering over-the counter medications and prescriptions,
enhanced space for the Women’s Auxiliary Gift Shop a bistro, a calming public Equipment Budget
courtyard and green roof with a rooftop helipad. A 700-car garage was also $30.5 million
included in the project.
Construction Budget
HBS’s medical equipment planning scope of services include creating a $300 million
composite budget for new purchases of equipment and furnishings for all areas
included in the project and developing purchase specifications for owner- Completion Date
supplied major and minor equipment. HBS also provided transition planning Spring 2020
and facility activation services, coordinated regulatory approvals and was
responsible for delivery and installation/relocation management services, as
well as coordinating and scheduling the activities performed by consultants and
vendors.
A key project challenge was the need to provide COVID-19 surge support while
the project was reaching construction completion. HBS worked closely with
Penn Medicine facility staff and caregivers to develop a surge support plan to
convert the fourth floor to a dedicated COVID-19 treatment area. The HBS team
worked on site to ensure the safety of staff and patients.
