The Morning Olympian ran this photo in its March 15, 1916 issue. It was accompanied by a short

article on the Mumby Lumber and Shingle Company of Bordeaux (at one time a very busy place in

the hills west of Littlerock). These huge timbers were known as “Japanese squares” and were cut

especially for shipping to Japanese lumber mills which would re-cut the large timbers to their own

exacting standards.                                                                                 31
