Likely taken around 1900, this view of
 the then Thurston County Courthouse
shows the stone building decked out in

    flags and bunting for an unknown
celebration. The central clock tower was

    destroyed by fire in 1928 and was
   removed. In 1949, a 7.1 magnitude
    earthquake epicentered between
 Olympia and Tacoma toppled most of

      the smaller turrets. Today, the
 refurbished building is on the National
 Register of Historic Places and houses

   the Office of the Superintendent of
             Public Instruction.
