In the mid- to late-1930s, the lengthy slope of the Nisqually Hill was neatly bisected by U.S. Highway 99. This
intersection at the foot of that long, long hill served as a site for several billboards: the Olympia Brewing
Company, Flying A gasoline (“puts wings on your car”), and a Shell service station (with a public telephone!).
Today, of course, Interstate 5 follows this route, and the billboards are long gone. 33
