Improving Worker Welfare THE PROBLEM
in the Oil & Gas Industry in
Oman
Problem
A major oil and gas company from Oman had introduced
a work citizenship initiative for employees across their
extensive supply chain to improve industrial relations.
They faced significant difficulties in not only ascertaining
the success of the programme, but also assessing
engagement and health & safety issues. REPORT
This was due to the remote work sites lacking internet
connectivity, the sheer volume of respondents, and a high
degree of illiteracy amongst the people being surveyed.
IDG were employed to design both a data capture solution
and a coaching programme to implement improvements.
ROOT CAUSE
ANALYSIS
Solution
The assessment method and process involved two-man
teams travelling to remote locations and presenting 61
research statements to be rated by groups of up to 200
workers. Data was captured on wireless handheld devices
and results calculated in real-time. The project involved
surveying front line staff, including both field and non-
field workers, of over 200 contractors and sub-contractors.
Key worker metrics included Health & Safety, Human
Resources, Medical, Operations, Training & Development,
Values and Worker Welfare to determine priorities for
