Active travel to reduce carbon footprint
Members of the Eco-Committee at
Durand Primary noticed that many
learners travelled to school by car,
even though lots of children lived
nearby.
The committee wanted to change
this and reduce their school’s carbon
footprint, a target from their Eco-Schools action plan.
Learners researched about the carbon footprint of travel, how that effects
the environment and about the positive impacts taking a brisk walk can
have on environmental, physical, and mental health.
Inspired by this, they signed up for ‘Living Streets’ walk to school challenge
known as WOW. Being a part of WOW encouraged learners to walk to
school by offering incentives like a bit of competition and being recognised
for the effort they put in; badges can be earned by individuals and as a
whole class.
Successes are celebrated each
month in an assembly, however
Ysgol Durand want other schools
to be able to reduce their
footprint and celebrate their
successes too. They are hoping
to inspire and encourage other
schools to sign up as well.
