Active travel to reduce carbon footprint




        Members of the Eco-Committee at

        Durand Primary noticed that many
        learners travelled to school by car,

        even though lots of children lived
        nearby.



        The committee wanted to change

        this and reduce their school’s carbon
        footprint, a target from their Eco-Schools action plan.



        Learners researched about the carbon footprint of travel, how that effects

        the environment and about the positive impacts taking a brisk walk can

        have on environmental, physical, and mental health.



        Inspired by this, they signed up for ‘Living Streets’ walk to school challenge
        known as WOW. Being a part of WOW encouraged learners to walk to

        school by offering incentives like a bit of competition and being recognised
        for the effort they put in; badges can be earned by individuals and as a

                                                                   Successes are celebrated each

                                                                   month in an assembly, however
                                                                   Ysgol Durand want other schools

                                                                   to be able to reduce their
                                                                   footprint and celebrate their

                                                                   successes too. They are hoping
                                                                   to inspire and encourage other

                                                                   schools to sign up as well.
