Pollution
Our activities as humans are introducing the natural environment to substances that
endanger animals. Substances such as chemicals in pesticides and fertilizers used
in agriculture that make their way into food chains and waterways, with devastating
results.
Plastic pollution is another problem for animals both on land and in the oceans, as
creatures become trapped in it or digest it in error.
We can prevent plastics and other items from entering the environment by reducing
our use of single use plastics by ensuring all our litter goes in the correct bin. We can
also eat more food that’s been produced organically to reduce the demand for artificial
pesticides and fertilizers.
Climate change
Changes in climate are impacting the food web and the interdependence of species on
one another.
Long term changes in temperature can have a huge effect on the ability of some plants
to grow, which in turn has an impact on any animals that are in the same food chain.
The complexity of ecosystems also means that changes in climate can make conditions
more favourable for pests and diseases, which can be devastating for other species.
By acting to reduce our contribution towards climate change, we are also helping to
protect against biodiversity loss.
