Wildlife Poaching
A problem that we have long been aware of is the hunting (generally legal) and
poaching (illegal) of wildlife for human consumption as trophies, traditional medicine,
food, exotic pets and sometimes by farmers to protect their crops or animals.
Some of the iconic animals we associate as being driven towards extinction this way
are the majestic elephants, rhinos, and tigers. However, there are many other wildlife
species threatened by this issue.
Why does it matter?
Humans depend much more on other species than we may realise. We rely on a
functioning ecosystem to...
pollinate supply supply clean air
our crops oxygen and water
control pests, treat provide us with
wastewater valuable medicines
Biodiversity effectively makes up our life support system and it’s essential that we look
after it for a prosperous future.
A biodiverse world also provides richness to our lives through enhancing recreational
opportunities and forming cultural identities. We should also consider the moral and
ethical implication of our dominance as a human species and its impact on other living
things, as well as our legacy for future generations.
