Local Places for Nature in Schools
Local Places for Nature is a Keep Wales Tidy programme, funded
by the Welsh Government.
Through this programme, schools across Wales have been
granted plants and equipment to develop a local place for
nature within their grounds!
Whether benefitting from one of the 27 small scale starter
packages available or diving into one of the 12 larger
development packages available, these schools are providing
habitats and helping to improve the biodiversity of their
grounds.
St Mary’s Catholic School in Cardiff are starting on their Eco-Schools journey
by creating a space for nature in an otherwise bare area of their school grounds.
Their Urban Starter Package, designed for areas with no green space, included a
large container with sensory plants to attract butterflies and moths, whilst also
providing a treat for the
senses. Ferns were also
planted since they’re known
to be great air purifiers in
areas where pollution can
be higher, and they thrive in
small spaces.
