Overfishing
We know that our demand for fish and shellfish are putting huge pressures on sea
life populations. This is having an impact on entire ecosystems within the oceans,
because just as on land, marine animals depend on each other for survival in their
interconnected underwater world.
We should make sure that we only eat fish from sustainable populations and that have
been caught in a way that doesn’t negatively impact on the sea environment
or other species that may be caught by accident. Looking
out for the MSC logo on any fish you buy or choose in a
restaurant is a good place to start.
Invasive Species
As people have colonised and developed civilisations across
the globe, plants and animals have been introduced to places
where they never were before. Sometimes this is on purpose
(e.g. Rhododendron) and other times it’s accidental (e.g Asian
Hornet). In some cases, the new species thrives so well in its
new environment that it can have a negative impact on the native
biodiversity.
Doing some research before buying plants for our gardens or ponds can
help to ensure we’re not introducing non-native invasive species into
the local environment. We can also help identify and report on
particularly concerning species such as the Asian Hornet here.
