Johnston CP School in Pembrokeshire received a wildlife development package
which included 40 square meters of
wildflower turf and 105 wildlife trees.
The turf was laid on a roundabout
in the car park which previously
consisted of only grass which offered little benefit to pollinators and biodiversity.
The trees were planted as a hedgerow along the edge of the field. This will act as
a wildlife corridor connected to a woodland area at the bottom of the site so will
benefit birds, bats, mammals and insects!
In addition to these elements of the package both schools also received raised beds
and many wildlife friendly plug plants and shrubs. All elements will further provide
food sources for insects and will encourage more wildlife into the area, increasing
the biodiversity of the school grounds.
As the children
were involved in
the installation and
maintenance of the
garden they’ll see
this all in action
which will support
their environmental
learning.
