Healthy Routines by Jacqueline Ringestad, Associate Environmental Health and Safety Specialist

Have you noticed that your willpower and motivation are highest in the morning? If you have, you are not alone.
Studies have shown that our motivation to engage in healthy behaviors is strongest in the morning.

Here are a few ways to help set the tone for a healthy day:
 Drink a glass of water when you first wake up. Not only does it help improve hydration, but it can
                      also increase immunity and energy.
 Eat a healthy breakfast. Breakfast is a great opportunity to start the day off with a well-balanced meal.
Protein, whole grains, and even vegetables can help set the tone for a day of healthy eating.
 Wake up at the same time each day.
 If you’re working remotely, get dressed like you’re going into work.
It’s also important to take breaks during your day - get up, stretch, and rest your eyes. Step away for a nutritious
lunch, and a few steps of activity.

And let’s not forget about winding down for the evening. Here are a few tips for a good night:
 Create after work and wind-down rituals. These help to establish boundaries and create a disconnect
                      from work for the day.
 Prepare a healthy dinner with the family. Preparing meals together is a great way to spend quality
time together, and to instill healthy meal habits.
 Spend time doing an activity you like that doesn’t include screen time – think puzzles, cards, trivia and
                      board games.
 Prepare for the next day ahead – layout clothes, set your alarm, put together your lunch.
Even small changes can make a big impact on your daily life, and the beginning of a new year is the perfect time to
develop new and healthy habits. Take some time to think about how you can improve your habits in 2021 and
           make it a great year!
