SAFETY FOCUS
Lessons Learned Continued
What evidence is there that we are entering a Generative Safety Culture? At the time I am writing this article our
Recordable Injury Rate is 1.25 up from a record low of .96 in July of this year. The Out of Limits year to date is at
3. These are great accomplishments that as individuals and as an organization we should be proud of. But does
that mean we have arrived at a Generative Safety Culture? Using the following data extracted from the ILearned
Intelex program you can decide.
Total ILearned Interaction items this year: 3243
Total ILearned interactions items At-Risk this year: 291
Total ILearned interaction items Coached this year: 209
At-Risk Behavior leads to incident and injury. That is evident because the injuries and incidents we suffered this
year aligned with the At-Risk Behavior observed during Interactions.
Coached items are a space where we all can learn. Have we done a good job in teaching how to use all safety
tools? Have we done a good job checking for understanding and competency? Without understanding and compe-
tency injuries and incidents can also take place.
Every organization has to measure injury and safety data using numbers. That is how it is reported and tracked.
But for me, it has always been about you as an individual not about the Recordable Injury Rate. Every time there
is an injury, my first thought is always are they going to be OK? And what can be done to make sure no one gets
hurt in this manner again? My desire has always been to help you go home free of injuries.
As I transition out of the safety department and into a new role, my department name and job title will change,
but I will always be a member of the safety team. Are you and all of your crew members a member of the safety
team? Will you stop the line on At-Risk Behavior? In order for us to be a Generative Safety Culture, we all must
do our part in the journey to Loram Safety Excellence!
Have a safe and productive day!
