My Emerald Isle
You may also be wondering why my story is
entitled my Emerald Isle. It is because Montserrat
is nicked name the Emerald Isle of the Caribbean
because of its greenery, its resemblance to
coastal Ireland and for the Irish ancestry of its
inhabitants.
The series of events leading up to this day
(St Patrick’s) attract tourists and returning
Montserratians from all over the globe.
On St Patrick’s Day we have the freedom run and
walk race from the north of the island to
Salem which is in the south.
The natives and visitors alike dress up in the
national madras, our national clothing made in
many different styles and fashion. If they do not
have the national dress they wear the colours
green, orange, white and yellow. Some dye their
beards or hair, others may paint their skin or
dress up as some of the largest leprechauns
you’ve ever seen.
