Electricity generation is also a significant contributor of carbon dioxide emissions into the
atmosphere. Approximately 40% of global CO2 emissions stem from electricity generation
through the combustion of fossil fuels to generate the heat needed to power steam turbines.
Carbon dioxide (CO2) is the primary heat-trapping “greenhouse gas” responsible for global
19
warming.
The use of renewable energy will reduce the amount of carbon dioxide emissions being released
into the atmosphere.
Energy Security
Energy Security means the reliable supply of energy and access to energy resources and fuel in
20
the required quantity and quality at reasonable prices. Energy security is particularly important
because of dwindling fossil fuel reserves and climate change. As energy consumption increases
and supply decreases, this will cause countries to look to other alternative sources of energy to
meet their energy demand. A diversified energy mix that includes renewable energy will bring
benefits of security of supply.
Economic Stability
Given the issues outlined above, the use of renewable energy offers a wide range of benefits to
a country, with the Caribbean being no exception. There are economic and environmental
benefits of shifting to a low carbon economy. Electricity produced by renewable energy sources
offers reliable, affordable, stable, and clean energy where energy prices are constant over time,
translating to a stable economy.
