Solar Energy
Energy from the sun referred to as solar energy, is a
renewable energy source used to power our homes,
businesses, and communities. Solar energy
can also be used for cooking, heating, cooling, crop drying,
distillation, and pumping water. Solar energy is the
energy obtained by capturing heat and light from
the sun. Solar energy systems use the sun’s rays for electricity or thermal (heat) energy. Solar
energy fluctuates from one place to another depending on geographical factors, sea levels of the
year, and local weather conditions.
The three types of technologies most used to harness solar energy are photovoltaics,
concentrating solar power and solar heating and cooling:
Solar Photovoltaic
Solar photovoltaic commonly referred
to as solar PV, is a technology that
converts sunlight directly into
electricity using panels. The process of
converting light (photons) to electricity
(voltage) is called the solar photovoltaic
(PV) effect.
