SUBJECT: Review of CSEC Music Syllabus SUBSEC 20
With respect to the above captioned subject the following refers:
The SUBSEC 20 outlines the new syllabus to be introduced in September 2018 and examined
from 2020. The syllabus outlines major changes to the existing syllabus. The following are
concerns and areas that require clarification.
STRUCTURE OF EXISTING SYLLABUS STRUCTURE OF PROPOSED
SYLLABUS
Section 1 – Listening and Appraising Section 1 – Music History and Theory
Section 2 – Performing Section 2 – Listening and Appraising
Section 3 – Composing Section 3 – Performing
Section 4 - Composing
1. Concerns (Pg11)
This new element of Music History and Theory is an increase in the content to be studied
by students. This new element requires students to study detailed history of seven eras of
music in a two year program. This depth of study is usually attempted at Tertiary levels.
Advance level GCE requires students to study only one era in detail and one era as it
relates to a chosen theme. This element as it exists is much advanced for students of this
level.
Suggestion
Consideration can be given to the study of one or two of the eras if there is a reduction in
the existing scope of study.
2. Drummers / Percussionists (Pg 10)
a. Clarification is needed for students who perform on drums/ percussion instruments.
The syllabus clearly outlined requirement for vocalist and melodic instruments but no
instructions were given for percussionist. Vocalists are now required to perform a solo
piece, one technical study, and one technical exercise. Will a new mark scheme be
provided for percussionist and vocalist?
