2. MUNICIPAL AFFAIRS
The President of tho Municipul Council, Saiyid Tariq bin Taimur
devoted Ms energies to i.nintaining and even improving the cleanliness
of the streets and roads of Muscat, but Muttrah proved too difficult a
problem with the resources at his disposal, and. the difficulty of
obtaining tho co-operation of the inhabitants. Ho tangible progress
v/as made in ivprovcincnts and repairs end new constructions of municipal
facilities owing to tie non-avuilability of cement at moderate rates.
3. nDUCATIOH
The standard of teaching and in fact general training of the
pupils of the Saiyidich School : as been raised considerably under
the direction of Ghtlib ivaqshbar.di the Palestinian Headmaster. Ke
stresses the importance of physical fitness as well.as education and
has inaugurated compulsory games of volley ball, and other outdoor
spirts fer the boys, and. even takes them out into the country and
sea shore for week ends.
The girls* school too, it is report:d has rade rapid advancement
tci.ards raising the standard cf education under the supervision of
."istress Muni rah, niece of Ghalib Maqshbar.di the head.iaster of the
Boys* School.
4. gEiZral coh:runicATio:<s
For the .major portion of the year Muscat was in direct cable
coiraunication with Aden only,owing to frequent temporary interruptions
of the Bahrain and BusJ-.ire cables. The Muscat - Karachi cable which
was destroyed by earthquake in November 1945 was re-layed by the cable
.ship Recorder in Hcveiiber. Direct cable corr.minication now exists with
Karachi, Aden and Bahrain. The cable ships "Cable Enterprise", "Horseman",
"Eullfinch" and "Recorder" visited the area on repair work.
Colonel H. Bloodworth, C.E.E. of Cable and tireless, visited Muscat
in June to carry out a 3urvoy on the possibility of installing an
automatic telephone system in the towns of Muscat and Muttrah. The
plans of the proposed system have been submitted to His Highness the
Sultan for his approval.
