                It will bo within Lord Salisbury’s recollection that Sir M. Durand, in his
            despatch No. 10 of tho 12th February 1899, roforrod to the possiblo appoint­
                                          ment of a British officer to Bahrein ; and

            under consideration havo expressed tho opiuion that this stop is both desir­
            able and obligatory.
               Lord George Hamilton will, thoroforo bo glad to be informed wboth or Lord
           Salisbury concurs in tho proposed appointment, and whether Mr. McDouall’s
           services can bo spared for this post.
               I am to add that the expense will fall upon Indian rovonucs.

               No. 19. Baliroiu Ageut has corno hero vory ill, and I think after ail
           Gaskin had bettor bo sent as temporary moasuro, as wo have appointed him to
           ropresont at Bahrein, and no ono else available owing to difficulties in the way
           of relieving McDouall who is not also quite suitable, as bo does not know Arabic
           as I thought ho did. If Gaskin goes, I think lie should get deputation allow­
           ance of fivo rupcos per day, as ho will loso Consular allowanco of thirty pounds
           per annum, also usual travelling allowanco. As Agent will bo retiring, tempor­
           ary arrangements will not cost much extra.
