to his tribes or to foreign rulers like Ibn Sand, which he may find it difficult to give,
but it is satisfactory that the more important members of the Khalifah family should
now realise the necessity in their own interests for recognising this important matter.

Translation of a Letter, dated Ramadhan 22, 1346 (March 15, 1925),^ from Hi*
Excellency Sheikh Isa-bin-A li-al-Khali/ah, K.C.I.E., to the Political Ayent,
Bahrein.

WITH reference to the conversation which took place between me aud the
Honourable the Political Resident in your presence regarding the note made by the
Persian Government regarding their claim for sovereignty over Bahrein; in
accordance with the treaties entered into between the British Government and the
Bahrein sheikhs successively, the last of which treaties was entered into with me,
which give the.British Government the right to defend the Bahrein Government and
protect them from any outside aggression which may be attempted against their
boundaries. I authorised the British Government to defend the rights of Bahrein
and empowered them, as agent on my behalf, to answer the said note of the Persian
Government before the League of Nations at Geneva, and have sent my son
Muhammad to accompany the delegate of the British Government for this purpose
and to assist the said delegate in any way he may require, to acquaint him of all
particulars which arc in his possession whenever it is necessary.
