I0ty|3|i|g}ncu1e In Qatar for n visit by Shaikh Salman and how there v/ao some
disappointment when tho visit did not materialise.

2. There has been disappointment and it seems that while the gap
(\ * between Shaikh Salman and Shaikh Ali had been closing, they may
bo moving apart again. Shaikh Ali has recently been encamped at
Zubarah. He asked mo to lunch with him there yesterday, Februury/7,
and I went, having first made it clear that X very much hoped that
he was doing nothing to provoke Shaikh Salman and that I would not
allow my presence to endorse any such action. I was told that lie
was not doing anything of the oort but he was there because the
truffles were particularly good and in Tact I found his camp two
or three miles away from the fort and no evidence of his having
done anything provocative, In spite of this I cannot help feeling
that pique at the visit not having materialised rather than truffles
may have influenced the choice of his site.
3. I am sending u copy of this letter to Gault.
