Your telegram No. 1U1 [of November 12: Iranian claim to
Bahrain].
Foreign Office spokesman will aorament as follows at 12.30 p.m.
today:-

(a) Reports have been received that the Iranian Government
intend to introduce legislation declaring Bahrain r.
province of Iran.
(b) Bahrain is of course an independent Arab State under
British protection,

(o) Iran has often in the past stated a claim to Bahrain on
I
historical grounds, but Her Majesty's Government have
repeatedly made it clear that they consider tho Iranian
olalm to be unfounded.
(d) Her Majesty's Government will continue to fulfil their
I obligation to safeguard tho independence of Bahrain.
