advised to rely for support on tho nssiatanco of tho British Government* which
will, if necessary, bo given him oitlicr to repel attacks by aoa, or to frustrato
a threatening movement from tho mainland.
5. It should bo clearly poiuted out to the Chief that so long as ho adheres
to his Treaty obligations tho British Government will protect him: but if such
protection is to bo accorded to him, ho must not bo tho aggressor, or'undortoko
measures which will involve' him in complications, and which arc considered
inadvisablo by tho British Govemmont.
