Common Error 10.1 Does the independent clause have a subject and a verb?

Despite being a minor holiday in Mexico, in the United States is celebrated widely with
musical performances, parades, and parties. ^
REMEMBER: All independent clauses must have a subject and a complete verb. The exception is
imperative sentences, as the subject (you) is understood.

The sentences below are missing the subjects and verbs in parentheses. Write the missing words in the
correct positions. Make all necessary changes in capitalization.
1. Although the southern U.S. states famous for their peach trees, most species need about one
month of cooler temperatures, so do not grow well in places that do not have enough cold winter
days. (are; they)
2. There no limit to the energy we can get from the sun, but only approximately one percent of the
