                                                           Thatched Roofs in England

                                     1  Thatching is a very old process for making roofs out of straw or grass.  Because
                                  thatch was light, cheap, and easily available, it was the most common roofing material
                                  in England until the end of the 19th century.  Starting in the late 1800s, most thatched

                                  roofs were replaced with slate, a material made from rock.  These days, however,

                                  thatched roofs are popular among people who want a traditional look or they are

                                  interested in using earth-friendly building materials.  Thatched roofs are valued both

                                  for their strength and beautiful.  A well-built roof can last up to 70 years.  On the
                                  other hand, a new thatched roof is expensive to install, and insurance is costly because

                                  thatched roofs have an increased risk of fire.  Despite these drawbacks, thatched roofs
                                  are a familiar sight in the English countryside.  One source estimates that there are more

                                  than 60,000 thatched roof buildings in Great Britain today.
