COMPARISON PARAGRAPH
Cultural Interpretations of Facial Expressions
1 Facial expressions may be similar all over the world. The way facial expressions
2
are interpreted is not similar all over the world. The interpretation of facial expressions
3
changes from culture to culture. People all over the world smile. Everyone recognizes
5
4
a smile as an expression of friendliness. However, some cultures smile more often than
6
others, and the cultures that smile less often might think that people who smile often are
not sincere. Some Northern European cultures feel this way about Americans who tend
7
to smile too easily. Another example of smiles being used in a culture-specific way is in
8
Asia. People smile there when they feel nervous or anxious. Very few other cultures do
9
10
this. This type of smile is not understood well outside of Asia. Eastern and Western
11
12
people focus on different parts of the face to read each other’s facial expressions. For
13
example, Chinese people tend to focus more on a person’s eyes. Westerners tend to
14
focus more on a person’s mouth and eyebrows. Finally, different cultures have different
15
social rules about eye contact. In America, for example, it is critical to maintain eye
16
contact. In some countries, it is considered rude to make eye contact with a teacher
17
or a boss.
1. Combine sentences 1 and 2 with the conjunction but. Delete the repeated phrase
similar all over the world from the end of the new sentence.
2. Start sentence 3 with In fact to show that this sentence emphasizes the point in
sentences 1 and 2.
3. Start sentence 4 with For example.
4. Combine sentences 4 and 5 with the conjunction and to connect the ideas.
5. Add a comma and in their opinion to the end of sentence 7 to emphasize that this
is not the writer’s opinion.
