This here's the story bout man's best friend
I tell this tale with pride.
It's about a dog named Rusty
And the night he saved my hide.
It was sunset on the prairie
The picture was serene.
The glow was gold and purple
Like a painting from a scene.
My day of work was done
Time to reflect on things we overlook.
Love of family and friends
And lessons not learned from a book.
I was settling in for the night
Maybe drop an eyelid or two.
The cows never much cared for sundown
Rusty's day was pert'near through.
Rusty wasn't much to look at
But the cows do heed his call.
He could bark and growl with the best of them
You'd think he's ten feet tall.
This night out on the prairie flat
A grizzly made his round.
Rusty took a stance, showed all his teeth
he was gonna hold his ground.
