“A New Command I give you. Love

one another.........(John 13:34-35)."

On the eve of the nal day of His
earthly life, Jesus gave His disciples

a new command, (John 13:34) - a

command which was a mother of all
commands! The Latin word for

command is, ‘mandatum’. The term
Maundy Thursday in the Christian

calendar originates from this Latin
word mandatum or command given

by Jesus to His disciples, on the

penultimate day of His life.

All the four Gospels vividly narrate, the

agonizing two nal days of Jesus' life

i.e., Thursday and Friday. It was on
the Holy Thursday, our Savior suffered

physical and mental agony utmost. He
was betrayed by everyone, including

His disciples and people. Arrested by
the authorities, He was abused,

humiliated, and tortured at the priestly
and royal courts.
