Everyone scrambled for the binoculars to look for the
whale. Sometimes they would see a spout of water
shooting up, which meant that a whale was close to the
surface, getting ready to dive. Twinkle and Mirabel went
from the lowest floor, where there was a snack bar, to
the middle deck; on the top deck at the bow, the wind
was fierce, and they had to hang on tight. Once the boat
slowed down so that they could see the sea lions on an
island, piled up like slugs and smelling like an old
outhouse. There was another island with snowy white
mountain goats climbing steep ledges, their tiny kids
staying close behind.
"Pelican at two o'clock," said the captain. "Wait! What
did I just say!!?? There aren't supposed to be pelicans in
Alaska!" Gallina told him the story of Joe from
Saskatchewan, and he laughed and laughed.
