days. We then headed for the Genoa region, where we
followed the seafront to Pisa. We returned to San
Gimignano and again stayed at the "Il Mulino" hotel. We
returned to Siena and visited a friend who runs an

agriturismo in the area. We crossed the Maremma to reach
the seaside and finally arrived in Rome.
I was able to show them the various tourist spots I knew, as
well as more typical places and restaurants, such as Santa
Maria in Trastevere.

In 2009, I had planned - as I do almost every year - to go to
San Giovanni Lipioni, and to tour Europe through 10
countries.
On the outward journey, I visited Belgium, France,

Switzerland and Italy, and on the return journey, Slovenia,
Austria, Slovakia, the Czech Republic, Germany,
Luxembourg and Belgium.
I passed through Nancy, Luzern, Portofino, San
Gimignanello (at my friend's place), Cesenatico, Ljubljana,

Vienna, Bratislava, Prague, Glashütte (home of Lange & Sohne
watches), Dresden, Koblenz and Vianden.
For this quite exceptional trip to cities steeped in history, I
booked a chauffeur-driven limousine and a French-speaking
guide. I asked the guide to show me first and foremost the
places that had contributed to the city's history. In other
words, I wasn't interested in modern buildings on my first
visit. I applied this formula to Ljubljana, Vienna and Prague.
