In July of 2012, Harley spoke to group of blind students at the
Texas School for The Blind and Visually Impaired that would soon
enter middle school there. He talked candidly with other kids who
were blind always willing to share his strategy about how to succeed.

Kim Aguillard, then President of the National Federation of the
Blind of Texas, describes her first encounter with Harley at the 2011
state convention in Austin. Working behind the registration table, she
heard a confident voice say, “My name is Harley Fetterman.”
She had previously heard rumors about a bright kid living in South
Austin and responded immediately with, “Oh my gosh I am so excited
to meet you—and my name is Kimberly—and we have a mentoring
program—and I think you would really love it—and we have a good
student division—and I am so glad you decided to spend some of
your precious weekend with us—and thank you for coming—and my
name is Kimberly.”
“Cool!” Harley responded.
Kim followed up her meeting with Harley by calling Beth a few
months later. Kim suggested that Harley attend a Project Innovation
Science Academy in Baltimore, Maryland. Kim stressed that she was
aware that Harley loved science and engineering—topics that blind
