The SCIVIS creed states, "We are all here to learn with our peers.
Let us celebrate our similarities and our differences. Let us respect
other cultures, religions, and languages. At our beginning, many were
given little chance but due to the people in our lives, we find
ourselves in a wonderful place with wonderful people. Let us flourish
in our learning, find joy in our experiences and remember our friends
and knowledge we gained at Space Camp," by Dan Oates, space camp
developer.
One of Harley's favorite annual camp experiences continued to be
Camp Discovery which he attended 2005-2014 except for 2013 when
he spent two months at the STEP program. When he attended Camp
Discovery in Kerrville, held at Texas Lions Camp, he met up with
many of his “cancer buddies” and medical professionals he personally
knew.
Camp Discovery was established in 1984 by the American Cancer
Society for children affected by cancer open to kids ages seven
through sixteen. The camp was abundantly staffed solely by volunteer
nurses, and physicians from six area Texas hospitals. It was refreshing
for campers to see their own personal medical workers outside the
hospital environment and experience swimming, fishing, climbing,
canoeing, laughing, dancing, singing, horseback riding with them as
buddies. Joey Cavasos, the director for Camp Discovery, knew Harley
well throughout his camp experiences there.
