One year at Camp Discovery, the theme for the week was
“Children's Books,” and the campers were encouraged to come to the
dance dressed as a character from their favorite book or fairy tale.
Harley boasted all week about his costume, bragging that he had the
best ever. The night of the dance, he proved he was right by walking
in with two blind mice embellished with white canes propped up on
his shoulders. Thus, with him in the middle, they were the “Three
Blind Mice.”
Another year, Harley was actually paired up with a dance partner
who also happened to be blind. When they were asked if they were
having a good time, Harley responded with, “Heck, yeah! This is the
best blind date ever.”
Sometimes, counselors unfamiliar with Harley's blindness ended
up making embarrassing comments that Harley easily brushed off
with a joke. One counselor remembers that when they were separating
the luggage to take it to the cabins, someone asked Harley, “Hey
Harley, which bag is yours?”
“Are you serious?” Harley replied.
