THE EXCEPTIONAL HARLEY FETTERMAN
Another counselor giving instructions to the group directed
everyone to raise a hand if they can see him. Harley simply stated
while grinning, “I can't see anything!”
Once when Harley was an older camper, an electric dune buggy
was on display for the campers to check out. When a representative
of the dune buggy company asked campers if anyone wanted to sit
behind the wheel and drive it, Harley immediately stepped up and
volunteered, “I would!”
The dune buggy crew, quickly made aware of his blindness, didn't
know quite what to do with Harley's dry sense of humor. Eventually,
they let him sit behind the wheel anyway when he remarked, “Just
kidding!”

The camping staff knew Harley never took anything too seriously,
even his blindness. He always had a joke ready, rather than be
offended if someone said something careless. Once, a fellow camper
said to Harley, “Hey, Harley, it's good to see you.”
“I wish I could say the same, but......” was his instant response.
