THE EXCEPTIONAL HARLEY FETTERMAN

Harley and Beth helped create “Super Hero” capes for the
participants while Nik Ciccone from FOX7 in Austin interviewed
Harley. Harley was asssigned to interview one of the patients at the
clinic and did a wonderful job. He really connected with his cancer
patient guest and even gave him hints about how to handle medical
procedures like dealing with needles (especially in using the port-a-
cath). Harley had overcome his own fear by his three part method:
“magic cream” (Lidocaine) was applied to the skin over the port, the
nurse would count to three before inserting the needle, and Harley
would not look at the needle but away towards his mother as he held
her hand. Harley explained how he had a deep sense of pride knowing
that he can endure medical treatments without crying. He often told
younger patients, “All you have to do is put on the magic cream, hold
your mom's hand, and look at her—it doesn't hurt at all.”

Harley welcomed the opportunity to be an ambassador at several
KVET-FM Radiothons to skillfully raise money for kids with cancer.
His outgoing, onpoint, comedic banter to convince listeners to donate
money went something like this:
