THE EXCEPTIONAL HARLEY FETTERMAN
“Two, I was diagnosed with my tumor right after my fifth birthday.
I have been through brain surgery, two surgeries for my port-a-cath,
and two rounds of chemotherapy. The second round of chemo was
dreadful! It came with a special diet, not a healthy one at that. No
cheese, no chocolate, no bananas, no canned soups, no leftovers, no
dried fruit, no sausage, and no peanut butter. I couldn't even go out to
eat. But I'm happy to say that I've had very good doctors and nurses.
Now I've been off of chemo for over a year and my tumor has not
grown in that time. The money that you have given helps to develop
the medicines that control tumors like mine.”
“I'm also here because I had a very special friend, Garrett, who lost
his battle with cancer when he was nine years old. Garrett had a
dream about helping kids fighting cancer to have fun and just be kids.
The money you raise will help find a cure so that we won't lose any
more friends.”
“The money also goes toward camps like Camp Discovery, a camp
I've gone to for the last two years. These camps do help kids dealing
with cancer to just be kids. And I'm very lucky to be able to go.”
“So, I want to say thank you to all of you for helping to KICK
CANCER'S ASS—There you have it.”
Garrett Burnham had been the first close friend of Harley who also
had cancer and who would not survive the disease. Their friendship
bonded one day as Garrett asked Harley if he wanted to play a video
game and offered him a magnifying glass so maybe Harley could see
the game better. Garrett was a brave cancer patient who fought hard
during multiple treatments. Up until then, Harley had heard about
other kids who had died from cancer, but Garrett was the first real
friend who died.
