Garrett showed Harley all about strength and determination by his
example and wanted kids with cancer to be able to come together and
try to be as normal as possible. His parents established “Garrett's
KidStrong” to support his idea for kids diagnosed with cancer. Harley
and his family supported this organization.
At the age of eleven, Harley testified at the Texas Senate and
House of Representatives in support of a bill requiring that all VI
teachers take special courses and have an internship before they can
be fully certified to be a VI teacher. The politicians were extremely
impressed with his viewpoints. Harley, himself, knew how much he
benefited from skillful VI Instructors and was willing to stand up and
explain before politicians how important it was to give every
opportunity to allow blind students to excel in life.
By March 2010, Harley had already given several “live” speeches
and interviews. He had an idea at the back of his mind that he wanted
to be a DJ or journalist on TV when he grew up. There was a “Super
Heroes Day” scheduled at Dell Children's and a FOX news crew who
happened to know about Harley's aspirations showed up to encourage
Harley to help create a real local news story.
