ANOTHER 10
Heidi Chackel, Editor
e at Southern Oregon Magazine are excited to be starting our second decade with you, our
readers! That’s right, we celebrated 10 years with our fall issue of 2018. And now on to
W2019 and decade number two. Many thanks to all of you for supporting us, our writers,
our photographers and everyone else who helps produce this magazine. Our goal when we started
was to develop a magazine that truly showcases all the greatness and beauty of Southern Oregon.
We feel we have succeeded in that and look forward to continuing to be your voice.
Please join us, and feel free to send any comments (yes, good or bad!) to me at Heidi@rogue5media.
com. And also send along ideas you hope to one day see in print. Know someone who deserves some
coverage? An event that brings good to the region? A local business that is doing great things? Or
any number of topics, we are always open to ideas. So please don’t hesitate to share your thoughts
with me. Pretty much everything we cover is local in some form or fashion, so keep that in mind
as your only guideline.
In this issue, our main feature focuses on the medical world. We’d like to tip our hats to those who
make quality medical care happen, those you see and some who work behind the scenes. In most
endeavors, certain people gain prominent recognition. These folks can’t do it alone, however. At
their side or in the background, stand essential individuals equally skilled in their fields. Writer
Lynn Leissler digs deep and shares what she finds starting on page 74.
Also within the pages of this issue you will find a number of great local stories. Did you know
Klamath Falls produced an Oscar winner? Yep, Southern Oregon can claim an Academy Award
Oscar winner—James Ivory. Learn more about him from writer Lee Juillerat and photographer
Larry Turner starting on page 50.
And don’t miss Chris Dennett’s column in our Chow section on page 106. I promise, once you
start reading, you will read every word he writes. He will make you think, analyze and hopefully
give you a New Year’s resolution to add to your list. Not only is he truly a great writer, but he also
brings about an important topic that revolves around food and connecting to those around you.
I wish you great success in 2019 and hope you accomplish all of your New Year’s resolutions!
Happy New Year!
Heidi
