Repentance from sin
man has not understood that God Himself, in the form of his
Son, Jesus Christ, would have to give up His life, to deal with
the punishment of man.
The Bible states clearly that a man cannot redeem himself,
by good deeds, through wealth or by sacrifices. Psalm 49 v7
'No man can redeem the life of another or give to God a
ransom for him.'
The sacrificing of animals was to teach man the seriousness
of the consequences of sinning and was only an image of
what it would really take to redeem mankind. 1 Peter 1 v19
'but (you were redeemed) with the precious blood of
Christ, a lamb without defect or blemish.' Here Christ is
compared with a lamb being sacrificed and is described as
perfect.
So mankind was condemned to death because of his sin but
was rescued from it by the death of another in his place. The
other being the Son of God himself who, being perfect,
was the only one able to make this sacrifice.
This is called Substitution.
Even the Jews who condemned Jesus to the Romans for
crucifixion understood about substitution. John 18 v14
'Caiaphas, (the High Priest) advised the Jews that it
would be good if one man died for all the people.'
That Jesus became a substitute for mankinds' punishment,
being sacrificed on their behalf, in one act of dying, is spoken
of in Romans 3 v24,25 '...through the redemption that
came by Christ Jesus, God presented Him as an atoning
sacrifice of atonement, through faith in His blood. He did
this to demonstrate his justice, because in His
forebearance He had left the sins committed beforehand
unpunished. The passage goes on to explain why in verse
