What a Christian Believes
had to be purchased back. God could not just destroy Satan
at that time because it would also have meant destroying
mankind along with him, to destroy SIN completely.
This purchasing or Redeeming was accomplished in a
particular way.
1Peter 1 v18 'For you know that it was not with
perishable things such as silver and gold that you were
redeemed from the empty way of life handed on to you
by your forefathers, but by the precious blood of
Christ...'
Ephesians 1 v7 'In Him we have redemption through His
blood, the forgiveness of sins, in accordance with the
riches of God's grace that He lavished on us with all
wisdom and understanding.'
Matthew 20 v28 ' ..just as the Son of Man (Jesus) did not
come to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a
ransom for many.' The many who will be ransomed or
redeemed, will be those who turn in repentance. Those who
do not, will not get the benefits of the the ransom payment.
The origional words used in these passages has the sense of
CHRIST going to the market place to buy men and women.
One of the other origional greek words used in the Bible for
redeemed is used in the context of a court of justice. Here
the image is of CHRIST claiming back that which he had
already bought. Christ shows that He has paid the ransom
demand, brings the sinner out without any further claims on
him and sets him free. Galatians 3 v13 'Christ released
us from the curse of the law, by becoming a curse for
us.'
