In the process of being born we entrust our power to the
protection our parents and our spiritual power to the protection
of our God parents. Because we are so small and helpless we
have a dependency on our parents for our needs. It is
hoped that when they decided to get together and have a family
they really understood what it was they were undertaking. If
their coming together was more of a power struggle and
marriage seen as a conquest then there will be trouble. Rather
than an equal partnership we have a situation where there will
be one partner in the dominant role. The new born is then born
into a difficult life, a life of inequality and disharmony. This is
not the fault of either partner. There are many variations on
how their power struggle takes place and it would need a good
counsellor to untangle them.
For this time let us accept that the first surrender of
power for the individual is with their birth. The first regain of
power occurs approximately at the age of twelve to fourteen. In
Christian societies this is marked by the rite of Confirmation
and seen as the coming of the Spirit. In other societies they
would have some form of event to mark the child entering into
