unconsciously asking adults to recognise that they are old
enough to be fathers and mothers. The first cigarette smoked is
to demonstrate that they are old enough to smoke and with this
they become subservient to the power of tobacco.
The second loss of power is to the system. Around the
age of twenty one we feel the need to expand our world. In the
West we receive the ‘key of the door’. Some might use it to
lock themselves in with where others might use it to escape
with, and yet again those who are in their power will use it to
access and exit life events.
At this stage in its life the adult will want to expand its
life. It will want to have a better job, to own its own house, to
be a pillar of society, to toe the social line. In order to do this
they will usually surrender some of their power to their
employer for a better job. They will need a better job to afford
the mortgage they need to get from a building society so they
may buy their house. So they surrender more power to a
building society. They become insecure because of the loss of
power and seek consolation in the confines of a religious
experience. They pray that everything will be alright even
though they don’t know what is wrong. The way they use their
vote at election time will be determined by their need for
protection from the powers they have empowered with their
own power. They will give their vote to those whom they thing
