CHAPTER 5
A REASON FOR HOPE
On April 8, the Institute for Health Metrics and
Evaluation at the University of Washington, which
had previously projected more than 90,000 American
deaths from COVID-19, has now lowered its estimate
on Wednesday to 60,415 deaths in the period until
August 4, which means that the coronavirus is now less
dangerous than the common flu which killed 80,000
people in 2017 and 2018 alone. Thus, quarantining
our country and shuttering our businesses to hide
from this virus makes about as much sense as
euthanizing a person because they have a cancerous
growth on their pinky finger. Nonetheless, until there
is a cure, it’s possible that every time there is another
outbreak, social distancing measures might be put in
place again. So, when will there be a cure?
