FEAR UNMA S KED
ask a certain percentage of people who lived through
the swine flu about their experience, more often than
not they will have no idea what you’re talking about.
A pandemic almost completely forgotten.
The West African Ebola Outbreak
Towards the beginning of 2014, the world started
getting its first glimpses of the next flavor of
pandemic: the West African Ebola Outbreak. On
March 23, 2014, the World Health Organization
began reporting cases of the Ebola Virus Disease,
or EVD in the rural regions of southeastern Guinea.
This officially marked the beginning of the West
Africa Ebola epidemic. It was in fact the largest
Ebola outbreak in history. However, it was the first
time that many Americans were even hearing the
word “Ebola.” Media buzz began spreading fear as
more and more stories regarding the virus started
to surface. I remember there being a scandal at the
Tulsa International Airport where unreliable sources
claimed that a flight had been quarantined due to
some passengers on the flight testing positive for the
Ebola Virus. People were terrified of their insides
becoming liquified, but at the end of the day, only a
whopping eleven people were treated in the United
States during the two-year run of this virus.
