We cannot count things. These are noncount nouns. (Non- means no or not.) A noncount noun
does not have a plural form and it cannot have a number in front of it.
Air water fruit toast juice

We often put an indefinite article (a, an) before a count noun.
A woman an apple
Use an before a word hat begins with a vowel sound.
An apple an Indian an umbrella
