                4) To mask disagreeable tastes.

              Having 1 ➔ 2 linkage, Semi-synthetic: e.g., Sucralfate

                                                   1) Sucralfate

              • Chemically, it is a complex of the disaccharide sugar, sucrose, combined with

                sulfate and aluminum.

              • Sucralfate is the aluminum hydroxide complex of sucrose sulfate.

              • Chemical name of sucralfate is: α-D-Glucopyranoside-β-D-fructofuranosyl-

octakis-(hydrogen sulfate) aluminum complex. Its structural formula is:

              • In acidic solutions (e.g., gastric acid) it forms a thick paste with a strong

                negative charge.

              • Properties:

              • It is white powder, insoluble in water and most organic solvents, soluble in

                 acids and alkalies

              Pharmacolgical effects:

              • It is minimally absorbed into the body, and its actions are entirely on the lining

of the stomach and duodenum as it can form gel-like webbing over ulcerated or

eroded tissues serving as a sort of a bandage. It is effective in the upper GI tract:

                stomach, duodenum, and possible esophagus.

              • The following actions are thought to be important for its beneficial effects:
