                                                                          ELEPHANT’ INCENSE BURNER
                                                                          17th century
                                                                          The luohan seated with a smiling expression,
                                                                          wearing voluminous robes open at the chest
                                                                          decorated with crane and cloud scroll motifs and
                                                                          pierced to the reverse as a smoke outlet, a scroll
                                                                          held in the crook of his left arm; the elephant with
                                                                          the head turned towards the back, wearing a saddle
                                                                          cloth with archaistic characters within sinuous
                                                                          dragon borders and elaborate beaded trappings to
                                                                          the body.

                                                                          十七世紀 騎象羅漢香薰

                                                                          The Luohan riding the elephant can be identified as
                                                                          Kalika, one of the Eighteen Arhats also known as
                                                                          the ‘Elephant Riding Luohan’ 騎象羅漢. Compare
                                                                          with a related bronze figure of Guanyin seated on
                                                                          an elephant, late Ming to Qing dynasty, illustrated in
                                                                          The Second Bronze Age: Later Chinese Metalwork,
                                                                          Hong Kong, 1991, no.7.

           GUOLAO
           18th century
           Each figure finely carved with a long beard and a
           smiling expression, wearing a scholar’s cap above
           pendulous ears, clad in long flowing robes incised
           with dragon roundels, Shou characters and floral
           scrolls, holding a large bamboo drum in his hands,
           wood stands.
           Each 19cm (7.5in) high. (4).

           十八世紀 壽山石雕張果老立像 一組兩件

           Zhang Guolao, one of the Eight Immortals, is
           recognisable by his tube-shaped bamboo drum,
           sometimes with mallets or rods. Compare with a
           related soapstone figure of Zhang Guolao, 18th
           century, illustrated by Ho Kam-chuen, Splendour of
           the Qing Dynasty, Hong Kong, 1992, p.384, no.250;
           see another example illustrated by M.Eberle,
           Götter aus Stein: Die Sammlung chinesischer
           Specksteinfiguren auf Schloss Friedenstien Gotha,
           Gotha, 2015, no.213.
