                                                                          Modelled standing with the heads in mirror image,
                                                                          each caparisoned beast supporting a tall gu-shaped
                                                                          vase elaborately decorated with scrolling lotus
                                                                          sprays, sinuous coiled dragons and elephant-mask
                                                                          handles, the bodies draped in cloud-collar saddle
                                                                          cloths with lotus panels to the sides, adorned with
                                                                          elaborated jewelled trappings. 28cm (11in) high. (2).

                                                                          十八世紀 銅太平有像一對

                                                                          The elephant in China is one of the seven Buddhist
                                                                          Sacred Treasures and symbolises peace. The
                                                                          ‘vase’ (ping 瓶) which puns with ‘peace’ (ping 平),
                                                                          and elephant (xiang 象) which also means ‘sign’
                                                                          or ‘portent’, forms a rebus for the phrase taiping
                                                                          youxiang (太平有象), meaning ‘Where there is
                                                                          peace, there is an omen (or elephant)’. See also
                                                                          a very similar pair of bronze elephant vases, 18th
                                                                          century, illustrated in Later Chinese Bronzes:

                                                                          A LARGE BRONZE ‘LUDUAN’ INCENSE
                                                                          BURNER AND COVER
                                                                          Ming Dynasty
                                                                          The animated beast seated with the head turned to
                                                                          its left, hinged at the front, the open mouth revealing
                                                                          fanged jaws, the body well cast with scales and
                                                                          flame motifs, the upturned tail with six curls of hair
                                                                          extending upwards. 40.5cm (16in) high. (2).

                                                                          SHUO
                                                                          Signed Suo Yun, 18th century
                                                                          The figure finely carved standing in long flowing
                                                                          robes with finely incised hems, holding a large peach
                                                                          in both hands, the face with jovial expression and
                                                                          a long incised beard, the stone orange-beige tone
                                                                          with dark-red patches, with rocky stand.
