Dongfang Shuo (160-93BC) was a Han dynasty
           scholar official and court jester according to Sima
           Qian’s Records of the Grand Historian. Over time in
           later dynasties, however, legends grew around him
           that he was an Immortal who had stolen a peach of
           longevity from the garden of the Queen Mother of

           A SOAPSTONE FIGURE OF HAN XIANGZI
           17th/18th century
           The figure crisply carved standing with a flute,
           wearing luxurious brocaded robes incised with
           cartouches enclosing striding dragons on a wave
           ground enhanced with floral spray and cloud motifs
           and embellished with black pigment, his head gently
           turned to the left with two tufts of hair tied into neat
           knots to the sides, the stone of pale green tone,
           wood stand.

           A FINE SOAPSTONE FIGURE OF LÜ DONGBIN
           17th/18th century
           Finely carved standing upright, his left hand
           clutching a ruyi shaped fly-whisk, clad in loose
           flowing robes with finely incised hems and
           roundels, a sword on his back, the face with serene
           expression with a long beard, all beneath a black
           cap, set on a large rocky soapstone stand.
           38.5cm (15 1/4in) high. (2).
